2010 SEA TURTLE NESTING SEASON
Our first nest of 2010
RB1--Laid on May 12, 2010
Our first Leatherback nest
of the season before the
barrier was in place.
B4--May 24th
Even the turtles celebrated
Memorial Day.
We had 10 new nests this
morning for a total so far of 23
nests in May
The hatchlings are coming!
RB1 hatched on July 9th, and a few live hatchlings
were found in the bottom on the egg chamber
when it was excavated.  A couple pictures of their
release.
As of July 11th we had 178 nests on our eleven
miles of beach, which is already 12 more nests
than we had all of last year.  It's a GOOD thing!
July 21st -- A quick update:  We seem to be having a good year,
so far we have over 200 nests on our beach.  We have more on
our B route than we had on the entire beach last year.  I've also
started a Facebook page for Volusia Sea Turtle Society.  For
some reason it has my name on it, but if you click on the left
side of the page on ads and pages it comes up.  When it comes
up click on like and it will get shown to more people.
As of today, August 10th, we have 267 nests in New Smyrna
Beach.  That means we have over 100 more nests than we
had in all 2009.  We have mostly Loggerheads of course but
we also have both Green and Leatherback nests this year, and
the season isn't over yet.  And the nests are starting to hatch.
On September 1st a large group of volunteers met to excavate one of the
Leatherback nests.  There were a lot of unhatched eggs, which often
happens in Leatherback nests, but there were also a lot of hatched eggs
and we found some live hatchlings to release.
This is one of the Leatherback
hatchlings, compare it to the feet of
the person standing in the back
ground
As of September 8th we have a total of 294 nests, including another
Green nest laid on the 2nd.  Although the season is drawing to a close
we may be able to reach 300 nests yet.
Loggerhead Mama and hatchlings.
She never comes back to see them.
They find their own way to the ocean.
We made it!!!!  Nest number
GB230 makes the 300th nest on
our beach this season.  We have
70 nest on the A route and 230
on the B route, and it's the 11th
Green nest of the season.  It's
been a good year and perhaps
it's not over yet.
